Make your first copy
- Add the employee, role, supervisor, start date, and review date.
- Change the tasks and timing to match the role and your required training.

Word and Excel files are editable and unlocked. PDFs are print copies. Save a master, then use a separate working copy.
Plan a new shelter employee's first shift, first week, and first month with a named supervisor and clear review dates. Use separate checks for observing a task, practicing it with support, and being ready to do it independently. Add your organization's required training and role-specific procedures before using the checklist.
How to use it
- Before the first shift, name a supervisor, arrange individual staff access, and prepare current procedures and contact information.
- On the first shift, tour the facility, explain escalation routes, and shadow a welcome, bed update, and handoff.
- During the first week, supervise practice with census reconciliation, privacy, task follow-up, and responding through the shelter's approved procedures.
- At the first-month review, discuss remaining questions and record readiness separately for each task. Set an owner and review date for any training still needed.

Give new staff a concrete workflow to practice
Use your own procedures for training and readiness decisions. For a practice conversation, walk through the beds, nightly count, and open tasks a new staff member would review at handoff.
